Bosch, Butts, and The Garden of Earthly Delights.
Most of you that have some familiarity with art history or art of the Renaissance may recognize the name Hieronymus Bosch, or at least his famous altarpiece The Garden of Earthly Delights. Bosch very convincingly put the “trip” in triptych, creating a fantasy world of unabashed nudity, fanciful topography, carefree abundance, as well as gruesome torture and terror. But butts. Bosch includes a great amount of them. Almost an unsettling amount of them. An unsettling amount of butts is brought to the next level with unsettling positions for butts, whether is be through placement or treatment of cheeks or anus. With so much detail and action occurring, this theme gets a bit lost. Anal penetration, expulsion, or the sheer salience of buttocks that abounds act in a double standard; appearing in both the Garden and in Hell, it can either be the location of torture or pleasure.
So, if I may, here are the cases of butt that I wanted to point out in particular.
(Also, that paragraph above become much more formal that I had intended - which you will probably see from the commentary I placed in the pictures- but let’s roll with it anyway.)
